Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that causes inflammation in the joints and ligaments of the spine. It may also affect peripheral joints like the knees, ankles, and hips.
Symptoms of AS include back pain, early morning stiffness and stooped posture. AS can cause other symptoms, such as appetite loss, weight loss, fatigue, fever, anaemia, eye inflammation and digestive illness.
Results of a systematic review and meta-analysis published in Rheumatology reveal that ankylosing spondylitis is linked to an overall increased risk of developing cancer.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) can be mistaken for several other conditions due to shared symptoms like back pain and stiffness. These include chronic lower back pain, reactive arthritis, fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, enteropathic arthritis, and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), according to CreakyJoints. Additionally, some people with AS may experience symptoms similar to those of rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, or piriformis syndrome, leading to misdiagnosis.

Recently ankylosing spondylitis has a new name -- axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). This change in nomenclature was introduced by the Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society (ASAS) in 2009 to better encompass early stages of the disease, including those that may not be visible on X-rays.
